Washington State Soccer Association held its third annual Hall of Fame awards dinner on May 6, 2006.  Among those honored were Denise Bender who was voted into the Hall of Fame.  Denise has a long and distinguished career in soccer.  She played from about age 14, usually on a select team. Denise played with F.C. Lowenbrau and F.C. Ramlosa of Washington State Women's Soccer in the Women's National competition in 1982 winning Open Division honors with them.  When Mike Ryan of Washington was chosen to coach the first ever Women's National Team, Denise was one of his first picks.  She was elected captain.  The Women played in Italy at the Munaquita.  They also played Canada in Minnesota in 1986.  This was the first women's international game on U.S. soil for them.

Denise continued to play and coach for many years under the Washington State Women's Soccer Assn. "banner".  Her teams were successful in 0-30, and 0-40 in National and Vet Cup competition.  She currently lives in southern California but happily came up for the banquet awards.

Denise joins other women; Bernadette Noonan, Janet Slauson and Joyce Trader from WSWSA who were honored previously.  Washington is proud of our women's contribution to the sport.  We thank her and all of the others who continue to share their expertise.
